Information for Learners

Information about our Courses & Qualifications:

NVQs work by testing your abilities in the workplace and to complete one, you need to prove that you can do certain work-related tasks. NVQs are assessed in a combination of ways: By portfolio – you build up evidence of what you’ve done at work; and by observation – an assessor watches you work and checks that you can do the tasks.

Short Courses are delivered by our tutors either in your workplace or at out centre. Courses are designed to be interesting and informative. If you have any concerns about a course please feel free to speak to the tutor before hand in private, they will support you with all your needs. For a full list of the short courses we currently offer see ‘What We Do

NVQ Activities:

If you are working towards an NVQ you will find it useful to check this section of the site regularly. It will be updated every six months with new activities for you to carry out and tips to help you to complete your qualification successfully.

Activity 1: Reflective statements are very important pieces of evidence for your NVQ portfolio. They can seem difficult to start with but once you get the hang of them you should find them straightforward and a useful way of making sense of situations that arise at work.

Think of a situation that has happened at work over the last month. This situation could be positive or negative. Describe the situation in your own words (remember to leave out anyone else’s name for confidentiality). If possible try to explain why you took certain actions.
Now describe what was good or bad about the situation. Include your personal feelings too.
Now think about your actions, if it happened again is there anything that you could do differently next time?
When writing your statement it is not acceptable to write ”Careworkers should” as this does not demonstrate you doing it. Remember instead to write ”I did” or “I would ”.

When producing evidence for your NVQ portfolio it must be signed and dated by you; this demonstrates that you have produced it yourself. If you use information from another source to help you (for example a text book or the internet) please list this on your work.

Activity 2: APEL stands for Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning. If you have previously experienced or learnt about one of the topics in your NVQ you may be able to include this as evidence in your portfolio. You will need to discuss this with your assessor but a useful starting point would be to gather your up-to-date certificates and write a short reflective statement about each course. This statement should include: what you have learnt, how the course has changed your practice, what you enjoyed and anything about the course you did not enjoy. You may also like to include information about any courses you would like to do in the future.
